The Origin and the Art of Navigation
Around 1745, the place already housed dwellings linked to Convento da Rosa, belonging to the Order of São Paulo da Serra da Ossa. However, it was in the following years that the space evolved into a true structured estate. According to Almada notarial records, it was during this time that Cipriano Pereira da Silva lived in Caparica, with houses rented to him by the Priests of the Convent.
By 1748, the same Cipriano was already living in his "estate of Vila Nova do Funchal". In the consulted documents, Cipriano Pereira da Silva appears as Captain-Lieutenant and Chief Pilot of the India and Brazil routes — a remarkable figure in Portuguese navigation.
The Name: A Tribute to Navigation
The peculiar name is precisely due to this figure: Cipriano Pereira da Silva, whose profession as a navigator and naval officer left a lasting mark on the place. The term "Pilotos" (Pilots) was born as a tribute to his profession and status, immortalizing the place's connection to the sea and the noble art of navigation.
Although there is no exact record dating the construction of the current houses of Quinta dos Pilotos, everything suggests that this estate is indeed the present property, named in memory of its builder or principal benefactor — a common practice at the time.
A Space of Prestige and Life
During the 18th century, Quinta dos Pilotos stood out not only for its agricultural role, but also for its remarkable social prestige. It was a place of distinction and nobility, composed of impressive two-storey houses, equipped with a mass house and private oratory. The owner was a professed Knight of the Order of Christ, a title of great social relevance at the time.
Its importance was recorded in history through memorable celebrations, including a grand wedding held in the year 1780. It was, in every sense, a place of life, gathering and tradition — a refuge for a prestigious family.
Evolution to the Present Day
Over time, and accompanying the transformation of Caparica from a quiet rural area to a preferred residential and tourist destination, the estate welcomed different owners. In 1807, for example, it belonged to the illustrious Judge Manuel Tomás de Sousa de Azevedo.
Today, Quinta dos Pilotos maintains its welcoming spirit intact. We preserve the memories of times past while opening our doors to our visitors. More than just a place of rest, this estate is a living piece of history, where the tranquility of the countryside, the proximity of the sea and Portuguese tradition meet. We hope your stay will be as special as the history of this place.
